Common Questions
from Incoming 5th Graders
Q: What supplies do we need?
A: You will need a binder, lined paper, dividers or pocket folders, pencils, pens, and a pencil pouch. It is also a good idea to get colored pencils, a highlighter, glue sticks, and a small pencil sharpener with a cover.
Q:
Will we have a lot of homework?
A: Sixth graders should expect about an hour of homework each night to practice what is learned in class or finish projects and assignments that were started in class.
Q: How many classes will we have?
A: Sixth graders take six classes: math, Language Arts, social science, science, Physical Education, and an elective. Your elective choices are beginning band, or the wheel. The elective wheel exposes you to four different classes, like computers, foods, music, and art.

Q: When will I get my locker?
A: You will be assigned your locker at Orientation a week or so before school begins. You can buy your lock for $5 at Orientation, too. You must use a school lock Ð you cannot use your own. If your older brother or sister has a lock from Luther that they will not be using, you can use their lock. Just let the attendance office know.
Q: Are the teachers nice?
A: Luther teachers work very hard to provide fun learning activities and to make sure all of their students learn. Only nice people would do that!
Q: What do I do if I need extra help with my work?
A: Most teachers are available after school or at Nutrition time if you need help. Ask your teacher for extra help or see your counselor about getting into a tutoring class after school or at lunch.
Q: What do I do if I am absent?
A: Your parent must call to let us know why you are absent. If your parent does not call, you must bring a note of explanation including the date(s) absent signed by a parent.
